History: Nutmeg was a highly prized possession in the ancient world, as it was used for trading. It was used as a type of drug in the 1880s, when it was described as an intoxicant. Records show that some people would take ground nutmeg with wine and feel euphoric and experience hallucinations for days.
Farming and harvesting: The nutmeg tree is native to Indonesia. The nutmeg seeds that you are accustomed to eating as a spice is grown in a bright red waxy casing called mace. Outside of the mace is the fruit casing.
Culinary applications: It is a staple in Indonesian, Middle Eastern, and European cuisines. It can also be made into an essential oil, and mixes well with an array of spices to make pumpkin spice, and chai.
